The Univers...

...ity.

Yup. Like many others my age, I recently began my studies at a university.
Thiw will be a very short blog, which will serve more as an update than anything else.

I've been very busy this month, which may come as a surprise, as you can usually find me in my bed, doing nothing in particular. But I've been given some amazing opportunities lately, and I've been trying to make use of all of them!

First off, and perhaps most importantly, I was asked to score a web game! I happily accepted, and made 3 short tracks over 4 days.

Play the game here!

Also, you can hear my original soundtrack on bandcamp!

The tracks are pretty ambient, to match the atmosphere of the game. I encourage you to check it out, because it's my unbiased opinion that it's a great game (I played it before even starting to make the music, and was still fery entertained). Completing it will require some dexterity ;)

Other than that, I've been partaking in several different musical compositions, two of which are still going on right now. But in the biggest one, I am working together with dem0lecule, from Canada.
We managed to get through the first round of the Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch, with this track:

The track is of a very dark nature.
Somehow, we managed to score the second highest points out of 64 participants o.O!!!

I have been doing a lot of other things as well, but one of the most notable of said things, is the game that I made for Ludum Dare 33, with the theme "You are the monster". I found the idea interesting that I had to cook something up. I only had 72 hours, and during that time, I managed to make...

Lux

One could say that the game is still in "beta" mode, but I think the concept is very interesting, and I should definitely develop it further when I get the time.

So the gist of this post, is that I've been very busy lately. I am sorry that this is a more boring and self-advertising post, but what can ya do?
Hopefully, I'll speculate on life as a university student in my next post, and include some interesting images.

But right now, I am tired, and on my way to sleep...

Cyprus

Eh...
I should probably have written this post a while ago already, when things were still fresh in my memory, but stuff happened, and I didn't. As soon as I got home from Cyprus, I had a concert ahead of me. That took a few days... After that, I finished a track for a competition. The results are not here yet, but you can listen to the track here:

The Dream of a Robot.

I hope that embedding worked... If not, I'll have to edit this post asap.

But anyway. Once I was done with the piece, and should have had some time, I committed a grave mistake. I started playing Terraria, and ever since, I never stopped playing. I've pretty much played 70 hours in less than two weeks! That's probably because I don't usually play much at this point in my life, but every time I do, I get really involved in the game I'm playing :p
Problem is, this is a pretty huge randomly generated game with a ton of exploring included, so it will take a while. I'll probably slow down with the playing a bit though, as I'm pretty much participating in 4 different music competitions at the same time o.O
Luckily, two are pretty much ending right now, while two are going strong for a long time (if I make it further in the rounds, as they are pretty much Deathmatch competitions).

Either way, now it's time to get into my trip. I won't tell you all what we were doing, but I'll summarize at first, after which I'll post pictures with explanations displayed below them :)

Summary:

I had tons of fun in Cyprus! To be honest, I spent most of the time just lying on a deckchair by the pool, reading "A Dance with Dragons". The sun was shining almost all the time during the days (only once did it rain during two weeks, and only for approx 15 minutes, and it was so unusual that all the natives were very surprised). Of course, I also swam in the pool, and when I got tired of being so close to the pool, I went a bit further from the pool, in order to play some games of pool with my grandfather (billiards).
But that was only when we stayed by the Hotel. Every day, we also went out in the city of Paphos. We went shopping, exploring, doing the usual tourist stuff, and such. But every single evening, we went out to eat in the local restaurants. Every evening. The food was quite amazing in general. In many places nowadays, in many countries, they simply heat up premade dishes (you'd be surprised). But not in Cyprus. Most everything that is made in the restaurants, is really made there from start to finish. Usually, it didn't take too long for the food to be ready either. Splendid service, more often than not. But after the trip, I had gotten my fill of fries and rice for a while...

There were an insane amount of Brittish tourists in Cyprus, related to some history thing about troops and such.

We also went to the mountains on a long buss tour (whole day), which was nice! We heard a lot about the history and politics of Cyprus, while we saw quite the views. Pictures will be further down!
Other than that, we saw some people that my Grandfather and his wife have known for 30 years.
Also... Them cats. At first, I thought we had accidentally arrived in Egypt or something. But I love it, as I love cats. There were a lot of stray cats in the Canary Islands as well, I recall.

But mostly, I went to Cyprus simply to relax, and to take a break from life. And it was a huge success!!

Luckily, I took like 300 pictures, so I can remember the experience. Then again, I'm pretty sure that 50 or so of the pictures are... Pictures of clouds...
(Speaking of game characters, don't click this link).
[I told you not to click it! If you keep this up, I'm going to cry :( ]
{That's it. Down the spike trap you go.}

No but seriously. A lot of cloud pictures (from the window of the plane). This starts of the picture segment. Enjoy the trip!

Just to give you a kind of reference, here's one of the many cloudscapes. Yup.

Just some pictures of the Hotel we stayed in. Not the highest quality, which is part of the reason I like it! Much more... Cozy :)

A view of the pool (most of it, there's a bit more outside of the frame). At this point, I regret not taking a picture of the pool table, so I could really drain the last drop from the pool joke (get it?).

Also, I found an interesting car. In Finland, I'm pretty sure this one couldn't exist. Which is a bit of a shame, as I like watching interesting registration plates (this is not a real racist ofc, many of the plates in Cyprus begins with a K, which leaves us with quite a lot of KKK's).

Then again, I found this in Finland, which is pretty neat.

Did I tell you that we also went to take one or two drinks in a bar most of the evenings? Now I did. I am not wasted in the picture, I just made a face for the selfie (to clarify).

This pretty much sums up my trip. I have no idea how I managed to take a picture from this angle without the arm showing though.
Why are capes out of fashion? I'd probably wear pretty wacky clothes, if only I wouldn't be ridiculed. Once I get famous, everything I do is okay though, so I'll probably get me some wickedly awesome costume. Oh, and also, I think I might lack shame, but I'm not entirely sure.

Nightly creatures visited us now and then, which is nice :3

I might give the impression that I know a lot about/like cars, but that is actually the opposite of the truth. But I happen to know that the Rolls-Royce was Michael Jackson's favorite car brand. Something that I for some reason remember from our equivalent of elementary school... Useful info has clearly stuck with me from school.

Some palms, some water, and such. One of the days we swam in the ocean. It was pretty cool (hehhe).

Ahh, here you can see Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock).
During our buss trip, naturally.

Some kind of designed building made by someone. Yup.

Me, at a spot, somewhere, sometime.

We also visited the Turkish side of Cyprus at one point. But 30 minutes was enough of that. Also, here are some cats. It's pretty cool, becuase the cat on the top was actually only half the size of the lower cat. It just isn't very evident from the image, at first.

I took tons of pictures of all the cool mountains. But I'll share only one. This gives a nice sense of depth, with all the trees, even if there's that annoying thing in the lower left corner.

Oh, and I also saw something that looked a bit more ghetto-ish, and decided to take a pic.

Some huge pots from an old Wine-making-thingy-place... (It's past 6 am, okay?)

Some orthodox church things. I don't believe personally, but I can appreciate the aesthetics noneheless.

A scary ghost swing o.O

We also accidentally came across Sir Sean Connery!

Well, not really. But a look alike XD
He's a friend of my Grandfather's. He spoke Finnish insanely well! Hau?

Three pictures filled with swords. Pretty neat, no?

Watching a parade while eating wonderful stifado. Mmm.... Stifado...

Here I am, on the final evening of the trip. Sitting. On a bench. In case you lack eyes. In which case you probably can't read this. Well then.

Some clouds, from the way home, to wrap it all up.
It's a shame, as I have sooooo many more pictures. But I can't show them all. I'm pretty sure that most people stopped reading a while ago already, despite my *cough* hilarious *cough* commentary.

Either way. As it's getting really late, I should probably proof read (poorly), and upload this blogpost.
I hope that the few of you that read this enjoyed the read XD
I porbably forgot to write something that I meant to write (like how much I missed the piano while being on the trip, as there were no pianos in Cyprus, pretty much, and that most people there knew English (including natives), etc. But oh well. What can you do?)

And that, as it has been said from time to time, is that.

The Fantastical Journey of Letters

It was quite a while ago that I used one of those. I always used to make them in the early entries of this blog. Combining all the things I'm talking about into a nonsensical title. Good times.
Let's dissect the title in 3, 1, 2 order.

Some of you might remember that a little more than a year ago, I created a game and submitted it for a competition, called Stencyl Jam. That game was titled D-Pression, and actually ended up winning 4th place.

One of the prizes of the competition was a 1 year subscription to Stencyl, meaning I could release games for Windows and Mobile had I wanted to, and apart from that, there would be no watermark, and I'd had a few extra features available to me and such. Well, before that subscription ended, I wanted to make another game.

I have always liked text-based games. One night, right before falling asleep, I had an idea that I found really interesting. Soon after that, I ended up composing some music, and a while after that, I actualized the game.

I then waited for a while, among other things for some competitions to end etc, before uploading the game. But a few days ago, I finally got to upload it. The game has been surprisingly well received so far, with about 7 thousand plays, and 50+ positive reviews. Not only that, but the game was also featured on jayisgames!

If you want to read a bit more about the game, you can do so here.

I'd appreciate if you took a look at the game! click on the image and it will send you to the game ;)

After a while has passed, I'll try uploading the game to some more websites, and see how well it does over at those.

Now then, here is even more self-advertising.

Recently, I have been working together with an amazing musician from Canada, who goes under the name dem0lecule.
We have been collaborating, in order to create a piece for a contest. The challenge was to create game music (menu, boss battle. level, etc.), and the track had to be inspired by something from Newgrounds. After a lot of Skyping and working, we were able to finally upload the 6 minutes long orchestral track that we are both very proud of.
As dem0 is much better than me when it comes to mixing, and has better intruments, the sound quality is way beyond that of my usual stuff.
I hope you'll take the time to check out our track!

Fantasiamaailma

For those of you who don't know Finnish, the title translates to "World of Fantasy".

Thank you for listening :)

Now, this is going to be a pretty short post, which I guess is a bit unusual for me, although perhaps not as much lately. The final thing I'm going to mention is that I'm heading off on a 2-week-long vacation! Well, it's not like I work or anything...

But it'll be a nice trip to Cyprus nonetheless!!

That said, I'll be less active online than usually. Expect some cool pictures when I am back though!

Speaking of nice pictures, it's possible to take some in Finland too :)

That is all for this post.

I hope you'll have a wonderful time while I'm gone ;)

Elaborate Selfies

What's up with that title?

Today, we're going to have a bit of a different blogpost. A 100% self centered one at that, a bit more like the blogs that normal people write ;)

I know this cool photographer kid who thinks he is very artsy and stuff, who likes to do elaborate camera-shutter thingeys with good lighting and shit. You know who you are, VICTOR.
I, on the other hand, am here to show that my selfies are waaaay cooler without all that stuff. WAAAY COOLER.

Well, not really, I'm only joking of course.

The real reason I'm doing this, is because I haven't really had the energy to write about longer and heavier topics. And, because I might as well share some of my weirdest selfies, because I can. I don't usually take pictures of myself. Only if I'm doing something special or weird, usually. So there is a slight chance that this'll be a little bit interesting anyway. But before that, make sure to check out the blogpost made by OneSketchist.

This is going to be a pretty short post, but you'll live XD
Shall we begin?

This is me, wearing a nice mask of flour. This picture is probably one of the first selfies I have ever taken, and it was taken during my confirmation camp. It's a thing done in Lutheran Churches in the very least. I'm actually not religious in any way, but the camp was actually really fun (as you might see), gotta give'm that!

So the order of these pictures is going to be totally random; just a heads up.

Even though it might not be evident in this picture, this is actually a picture of me at one of the happiest points in my life. What could that be? You know how sometimes relief is the greatest happiness? Well, this is the day that I got to leave the army, and the first time in almost half a year that that locker was pretty much empty.

This is me wearing what is probably one of my favorite outfits. I don't ever wear it though, as it's that out there. Very warm for the head too, and I'm not that hot-headed. I wore this the previous Halloween. Makes me think that I should probably dye my hair black again (this is not real hair ofc; it's actually a winter hat. I'm just saying, I want my hair dyed again).

Am I hiptser enough for you in this picture? What, you think it's too try-hard? WELL PSYCHE, it's not actually my clothes, but it's OneSketchist's again! AHAHAHAHA. .......
But no, it's really a pretty neat outfit. Perhaps not my style though :p

Prepare for trouble, and make it double.
To protect the world from devastation,
to unite all people within our nation,
to denounce the evil of truth and love,
to extend our reach to the stars above,

JESSE! JAMES!

Yup. This is me cosplaying James, from Team Rocket, from Pokémon. I dressed up for a thing called "Penkkis", which is basically a big event including cosplay and other fun stuff taking place before graduaion. Good times :)

If you want to see a better and more fabulous picture where I'm wearing the costume, just click the image!

And can I just say how much I hate the user interface on blogger sometimes? I had to go and edit a lot of code in the HTML section to remove an annoying thing that shouldn't even happen -_-

This is really one of the first selfies I ever took, probably among the first 5 or so. I don't know what age I was in this picture, but my guess is that I was around 14-15 years old or so. I think it's a pretty cool picture still, partly because of the lighting and the angle, but also because of the hair right after I took a shower. That's probably why I took the picture in the first place too, because usually, my hair is pretty boring :p
The thing that irritates me the most about this picture though, is that I know that my lips aren't that smooth anymore. I have a lot of cracks and other dryness related problems with them. But that may just be because the winter has just passed. Maybe this first world problem will resolve itself during the summer?

I guess that thing with the lips bothered me so much that I decided to use some makeup? The quality of this photo is a bit low because of the dark lighting, but I think it's still clear. I think it's funnier if I don't explain the context though, so I'll let that remain a mystery ;)
OneSketchist was really right though. Taking pictures up close really causes noses to look big. Now I can't unsee it o.O

MALE TEARS!!!
That's a 100% radical feminist related joke. I mean, I'm not a feminist, which is part of the joke. That may come off as a bit loaded, but one of these posts, I'll explain my views on Feminism.
But yeah. This really is a picture of me crying very manly tears, watching Clannad, which is a very emotional anime. Once again, because of the lighting, it might be difficult to see that I'm crying, but you can probably spot the teardrop on the left side of my face just below my lips. Speaking of lefts and rights, it's pretty interesting how some people think from their own perspective, while other people think from the perspective of other people, isn't it? Apparently, it usually is related to how much empathy a person possesses. A lot of 's' -ess in that word. Not much unlike "Assassins".

Now why would I take a picture of me crying? Well... Probably because I cry so rarely. On some level, it proves that I am human, doesn't it?

(Mission accomplished, now all the stupid humans around me will never realize that I am actually an alien from the planet Gatzikhczorb! Muahahahahaha!)

Not much to say about this one. I just posted it for the lolz :p
Googly eyes are always fun. I remember taking a few to school one day, and putting them up everywhere! On a statue in our school, on a poster of a skeleton, and a few other select places. The teachers didn't seem to mind though; the eyes were usually left alone. I still have a lot of them. Let's see how universities appreciate googly eyes...
Btw, if you didn't notice the makeup in my makeup selfie, let me make it up to you!

In this picture, you probably have some kind of sickness if you can't see the makeup on my face. This is me at one of the worst points in my life; the day that our 11 days non-stop army camp began. Man that sucked! Luckily, it's all ogre now.

This was the before picture. Time for the after picture.

This is right after 11 days in the woods. Can you imagine all the freshness? I must've smelled really nice... I seem to have survived that experience with a smile on my face though, because as I said, relief is one of the best feelings :)

We're closing in on the end of this pointless post. This is the most recently taken selfie in this entry. I was surprised to find some beard lichen (skägglav, or Usnea of the family Parmaliaceae) in the forest around our cabin in the woods. I guess that it's actually some kind of fungi, but it's pretty obvious where it got its name from. I think it's actually illegal to collect or harm it here, but this one was not connected to a tree, and was probably already dying, so it's okay! I put it up on a branch afterwards anyway, but I don't know whether that actually helps at all :p

This is me trying to make myself look as sexy as possible. I hope I succeeded ;)
I honestly don't remember why I took this picture, but I think it's worth sharing true beauty.

Now, we only have one picture left. I must warn you though, it is pretty graphic, so it is not for those weak of heart. What I'm sayin', is be prepared. That is also why the picture is partly censored. But for those of you who want the full effect, you could always hover your mouse over the image, which will remove the censored box...

So yeah. Told you it was pretty explicit. I usually don't take these kinds of pictures, but I've noticed something interesting with the lighting. If I stand at a specific angle, and have a strong light from one direction, it will give the illusion that I actually have abs (albeit small ones)! Which is not true :p
I didn't manage to recreate it fully in this image, but it worked well enough that you can see the effect a little bit.

Oh, and one last thing. I know you hovered the mouse over the image, you pervert you! On second thought, I probably should've photoshopped it so that a duck appears instead of the censored box upon mouse over, but I was too lazy, so it had to be the original image instead XD
That'd be a pretty good picture to photoshop, just saying.

That is pretty much all for now though.

As usually, I'll also post a couple of the songs I've made recently.

The first one, is a pirate themed track, which I've composed myself, using Orchestral intruments. The mixing could be a lot better, but oh well. Some day I will learn!

And the second one is a pretty short improvisation on the piano. You know. Just about 1 hour long.

I know noone will listen to at least the second one here, but I had to post it out of tradition anyway.

But that really is everything for this blog. I hope that I'll get some more energy to write about something more interesting than myself next month, but I'm actually going on a trip to Cyprus, so we'll have to see how that goes o.O

That said, even if I don't write that frequently at the moment, OneSketchist is currently writing once a week it seems, and I recommend reading his blog if you're looking for mine but no new post has been uploaded!

Anywho... I hope you're having a good time and will continue having one.

Until next time, suckas.

PADS

No. I'm not talking about that kind of pads.

To start off with, hi. I'm back from one of my longest blog-writing breaks. Why? I just didn't really feel inspired to write anything, and when I did, I didn't have the time, or my computer wasn't available. I might've said this before, but I just cannot write without feeling like it.
I've also been surprisingly busy, considering I don't have a job. I've been playing in a big band orchestra, I've been composing music, spent time with friends, and occasionally, even drawing as well as playing games (I've got Bloodborne now too, and I'll probably start playing tomorrow).

But as much as I've done all that, I've also done something that I've longed to do for a looooooong time.
And what could such a thing be?

Quite naturally, it's binge-watching anime to an extremely unhealthy extent. There are just so many that I've neglected to watch earlier, and some new ones too. If you ever want some recommendations, just ask me.

But yeah. I've spent days upon days (hell, at one point it was weeks) watching anime lately. Now, I know that some of you might not understand this at all. I know that the appeal isn't for everyone, especially people who don't get the Japanese culture, which is indeed, very different from many Western ones.
But what I can't accept is when people think that anime is childish, and thus, not worth their time. The mere fact that a person would refuse to watch it for such a reason, shows to me that those, if any, are the people that are childish. That's because such a thought would arise from the thought that anime couldn't possibly have anything worthwhile to offer them. Which could not be more wrong, and is a pretty naive thought, really.
Now, of course, much anime actually is childish. The ones that are directed towards kids, like Pokémon and Digimon. But you wouldn't think that all hollywood movies are for kids just because some happen to be?
This goes not only for anime. I've seen many people diss Western cartoons/animations in general because of the same reasons.
But don't get me wrong, I have nothing against people who simply don't enjoy the media, for personal or other reasons. It's not for everyone, which is a simple fact. But not liking cartoons because they're "childish" is about the same as not liking books because one doesn't like the covers.

But enough of that; there's no need to go into deeper detail.
Clearly, not all anime is good, according to anyone's standards. But it's easy to see which ones are popular, and with a little research, it's easy to find out which animes will suit you. Sometimes though, I've been really surprised and enjoyed something way more than I thought I would have, based on the descriptions and art styles (different anime art styles are as broad as western ones are, even if there are certain stereotypes).

There's another thing that bothers me too. I don't get the people that watch dubbed anime, most of the times. This is for a couple of reasons. Mostly, it's because all animes I've ever seen dubbed, have been really poorly dubbed. This includes pretty much all languages I've seen them being dubbed to.
Now, of course, if it's a show aimed towards small children, it makes sense. Once again, using the example of shows like Pokémon. This is mostly because small children tend to be unable to read, especially as quickly as is required.

Disney movies, however, are actually somewhat okay when dubbed into at least Swedish and Finnish, probably because they know that the movies will sell. Also, because the original language for Disney movies is English, the cultural difference isn't nearly as vast. There are however, just a few good English dubs of anime out there. I think that much depends on both the voice actors, the translators, and their understanding of and investment in the anime they're trying to dub. If my memory doesn't betray me, Kino's Journey is one of the animes that works just fine in English. I think the voice actors did a good job, and there isn't much Japanese culture to shred in the anime anyway.

But the other reason I have a problem with the dubbing, is because so much is lost in translation. Admittedly, I don't even understand much japanese myself, but everyone can tell more from the tone of voice and the words that are used in the original language. That, and in Japan, where anime is a huge deal, they actually put a lot of effort into the voice acting, in general. This is not to say that watching dubbed anime is boring, if you don't have access to (or really hate reading subtitles) the original subbed version. I just know that most people, after trying, will get more enjoyment out of watching the subbed ones. But I know that in many countries (including ones like Germany, Spain and the U.S. of A.), people are simply not used to watching subtitled anything. In Finland, it was actually decided very early on that all foreign movies and such would be subtitled instead of dubbed, because it's cheaper. Well, of course, the same rules didn't apply for shows aimed towards kids, for natural reasons.
But if anything, that decision allowed for many Finnish children to at least partially hear/learn foreign languages, while still being young enough for it to make an impact. If it were not for that fact, you could be certain that my English speaking/writing ability wouldn't even be this good.

But ultimately, the problem I have with the translation, comes down to the fact that the translators and some times voice actors often do an awful job, which changes the entire personality of characters. That, along with the fact that there is a culture clash, which leaves us with a weird atmosphere, in many cases. Who knows, if anime gets any more popular, and shows aimed towards adolescents and adults are actually aired on decent networks, maybe the dubbing will be better too. But thus far, they clearly don't reach the same level as the original adaptations.
For my fellow Swedish-speaking Finns, the situation might be equated with trying to watch "Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix" the movie dubbed to Swedish. Not impossible, but not as enjoyable (except for comedic reasons) by far.
Thinking of it, abridgers on the internet actually tend to do a better job than companies when it comes to dubbing anime. Probably because most abridgers actually know what the anime is about, and they don't need to worry as much about things lost in translation.

Enough ranting about that. For those of you who are still here and have not been bored away, good for you.

Trivia time. I've noticed that almost every single good/known anime is based on mangas. There are exceptions; some are based on visual novels/games (like Clannad and Pokémon), and a few (like Code Geass, and I believe [Tengen Toppa] Gurren Lagann) get their starts in the form of anime. But most of the time, they are based on mangas. That's pretty interesting to me. In Western movies, there are ones that are based on books and comics too. But except for super-hero movies, they are often not as popular as the books. But in America for example, anime seems to be much more popular than the mangas that they originated from. I geuss that the format is just easier to take in, and get your hands on.

But here's what I really wanted to talk about today, all other ranting aside.

And that is, PADS.

But what is it?

It can be devastating, empty, longing, sad, philosophical, horrible etc. Even if you don't watch anime, you can probably relate to it, as it's pretty much the same as PSDS, but focused specifically on anime.

PSDS, is Post Series Depression Syndrome, so you can probably figure out what PADS is.

Especially binge-watchers like myself, know of this phenomenon. Have you ever spent whole days watching or reading something long, like a tv-series or a series of books? You've been fully invested in the story, the characters and the whole. But then, suddenly it all ends, and you're finished. You lose your sense of direction. Something that took up pretty much your entire life, for a short while, is now gone.

This is, PSDS.
And it is very real. Some select people even tend to develop actual depression, with PSDS as the trigger (probably not as the sole cause though).

Not all are affected by it to the same extent. It can also happen even if you've watched something over a long period of time, only a little bit at a time, but it's usually not as extreme in such cases.

Well, I'm actually a very emotional and empathetic guy, despite what some may think. I also get really invested in things I like (can be anything from reading to playing games; the list goes on).
So when that all suddenly disappears, I can really feel it.

I'm also a super ultra hyper duper binge-watcher. I've been known to spend more than 16 hours a day, for a few days, wathing only anime (eating while doing it too), and occasionally playing the piano (I can't get rid of that). So I race through series, anime or not, at a very fast pace. But most of the time, I'm still somewhat okay, because I can move on to the next thing (or gather inspiration from what I've watched, and turn it into some kind of art form [including music]).

While I've watched several Western tv-series and read several books, they almost never affect me as much when they end, as a manga or an anime does. But there's a real difference between animes as well.

You see, I am never as devastated when something ends, if it has been a mostly comedic anime, or something otherwise unserious. This is also the reason why I think anime affects me more in general. It's because the Japanese tend to create more grand and emotional stories, and they use characters with very distinct and passionate personalities. I'm not saying that never happens with stuff from other countries, but the Japanese have a large abundance of that kind of material. And that really speaks to me. Another thing is the fact that the Japanese tend to view the world very differently than somewhat more Western people tend to do. They often focus on different things when it comes to story writing too.

Realism is often pretty completely abandoned. The comedy is also very different, and may take a while to get into. There is a different way of observing nature, and so on. The characters are often very different than stereotypical American movie protagonists. That said, there are several similarities too. The Japanese are obviously very inspired by Western media in several cases. But they always put their own spin to it.
But the entirely different cultural understanding, is precisely why I find that most dubs fail to live up to the original.

I'll give the classic example of the difference between stereotypical American and Brittish comdy, to depict how important cultural differences can be.

While the American one tends to focus on "owning" someone else with clever one-liners, or something like that, Brittish comedy is more about the actual protagonist being the silly one, drawing the attention to him-/herself not by being cool, but by being funny, perhaps by being embarrasing.
Japanese comedy tends to be more like the stereotypical Brittish one, though that is of course not always the case.
Also, thanks to the internet and other media, cultural differences tend to get smaller over time. For example, "The Simpsons" tends to use more of the stereotypical Brittish humor in general.

But here's another thing I like about anime. The characters, while they may be goofy, get really serious when it really counts. They have clear morals, burning passion, and through the series, they often show much character development.
And like I said earlier, the stories are often very grand, meaning that at times, the whole world will be at stake. That is somewhat similar to many Western films. But with anime, the characters express their emotions much more often than the characters I can see in the Western alternatives. It ranges between anger, sadness, happiness and simple understanding and knowing what has to be done; determination.
I realize this could be said about pretty much anything, but I think you'd understand what I'm trying to say if you watch a good anime or two.

More than that, Japanese writers tend to be really, truly evil. On the same level as George R.R. Martin. One makes a big mistake, if one expects that no important characters will die before the end of a popular anime. And often, very many characters are killed off, sometimes, very unexpectedly. And more often than not, it's when the characters are either fighting for a cause, or protecting someone else. But sometimes, they just die in bed from a sickness or something like that, in a very tear-jerking manner. Anything can happen, really. But all the same, there are lots of happy moments as well.

This was focusing mostly on the scripts too. A lot more could be said about the art, the "camera" angles and such things, but I don't have time for that now (and you probably wouldn't be interested anyway).

But here is the point I was coming to. Because there is so much to be invested in, in a good anime, the loss is all the greater when it's over. I often stay and reflect upon the characters, and the story, and wish for there to be more, when a show is over. While I have learned to adapt and move on, some animes leave such a big hole that I can easily feel it. The most recent one that did this to me was Gurren Lagann, but not too long before that, I watched Code Geass, Clannad, and Shingeki no Kyojin (and read even further in the manga), and all those left the same or similar feelings, to different extents, for pretty long amounts of times. It takes time to snap back into reality. If I can react this much to a character dying or ceasing to do new things in a story, I don't even want to know how devastated I would be if a close friend of mine were to die. Contrary to popular belief, I keep my feet on the ground, even though my head tends to float through the sky with the clouds.

A final thing I want to mention, is that almost all of the stories, want to teach some kind of lession, or express a powerful moral or way of looking at life, all the while telling a fascinating story. One of the most used lessons is the one of going through with one's passions, and never giving up. One very clear example of this "lesson" phenomenon, is the popular GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka).

I could go on about this forever, but I suspect I may already have bored you enough, if you've even managed to make it this far.

I'll end this by showing off some things I've made during my absence from writing.

First off, I've actually invested some money in virtual instruments for once, and made a pretty unserious but somewhat interesting orchestral track using them. The volume is a little low though, because of poor mixing, so you may want to bring it up a notch.

Conquest of the Uncharted

At the moment, I'm also working on a pirate theme.

I've also composed a track that was inpired by all the anime I've watched recently, which is a solo piano composition.

A Song for Someone Else

Other than that, I drew a sketch based on a picture I found on google, of the character Levi Ackerman, from Attack on Titan.

Today is actually Pico Day, which is the birthday of Newgrounds. Not only that, but it's the 20 year celebration! I wasn't going to do anything to begin with, but I drew a small thingy using paint.net, using my mousepad, today... Because we all know I'm too lazy to spend half a minute to actually go get my mouse.

I'm not really an artist, yet at least (as in a painter/whatever, though I'm obviously a musician). But I try to make small things now and then, just in case I someday actually decide to get passionate about creating art.

I've also been working on a secret project, which is actually finished, but there are a few things to do still, before publishing it.

I think that I'm pretty much done for now.

I'm impressed if you read all the way through my incoherent ranting.

See ya next time, ya'll ;)

Absurdity

We live in  a strange world.

How often do we stop to question not only what's going on around us, but our entire reality? With all the distractions out there, we tend to just accept everything as soon as it's presented to us. Our scepticism is to a large part based on trying to figure out whether something is good or bad, not whether it exists or not.

We are becoming an increasingly passive generation. More self-centered. Most of us have seen so much stupidity that when we hear something new that reeks of idiocy and is going on, we immediately think that it's fact, without really caring one way or the other. Then again, as soon as someone says "No, it's fake", we tend to believe them as well. I'm not speaking for all of us, nor nececcarily for myself either. But based on my observations, this is true for many people.
In the current day with the current media, people tend to be more and more drawn towards escapism.

I don't really have a stance on whether that is good or not. Because I have other more important, and or entertaining things to focus on. The irony hurts.

We go to school, move in our social circles, do our jobs, and eventually return home, back to our books, our games, our computers, or perhaps our phones. What the approach is doesn't really matter too much in the end. Only on an individual basis.

I'm not saying that all our attention lies in another world, but it sure seems to own a lot of our focus. We are so divided between different tasks and wishes that we totally miss out on what is going on around us. I know that this at least is true for me, in most cases. There's always something going on; some distraction or something I feel the need or want to do.
So I seldom just take a break and think about how weird everything actually is.
But when I do, it really hits me. What the fuck is going on? Really.

I was walking home from my granparents' the other day. Yes. Walking, alone. That's the easiest way to get our (or at least my) thoughts going. And even while walking, many of the times I find myself thinking of not much else than my destination, my plans for the day, or memories. There's nothing wrong with that; it's just something to do while walking. I guess it's naught but natural to focus on ourselves or those around us.

Anyway. As I said, I was walking home. Maybe it was the weather, or maybe it was something else, but for some reason, all my attention was shifted to my surroundings. I saw everything, felt everything, heard everything. The trees, the wind, all the buildings, the people, the smells, the cars. Everything. I walked past a few windows, saw people sitting by their desks, doing work, or perhaps thinking about something completely different. What were they going to eat today? How much money would they be making by the end of the month?
Everyone outside was going somewhere, and people didn't really exchange much else than a few glances, if even that with each other.
There's nothing inherrently weird about this. But I continued thinking.

Although it's very distant to most of us, there are a lot of seemingly normal things going on elsewhere in the world. People are hungry; they're having wars; they try to find solutions for diseases; they worry about global warming; they think that homosexuality is unnatural; they think homosexuality is completely natural; They go to the gym; they worry about their looks; they are depressed; they are having the time of their life; they make love; they make hate. Imagine if for just a few seconds, everyone would stop to think about what the fuck they're actually doing.
It probably wouldn't change much. But for those few seconds, we would have peace and calm.
But what is peace, what is war? Why do they exist to begin with, along with everything else?

Doesn't anyone find it absurd that for eternities ago, humans didn't even exist. But for some reason, nature decided that the most logical thing for the living beings was to develop two different sexes, along with their private parts. And God (despite his inability to actually exist as anything else than a concept) knows that it's perfectly sense making that all the dna which is the code for pretty much all living things should be transmitted though a penis, in the form of semen, into eggcells, which would during a certain time develop into a new creature, which in turn will or will not eventually grow up to be circumcised if for example, Jewish, grow up to praise the holiness of cows if born Hindu, or perhaps won't care either way, but wants to become a great writer. Meanwhile, there are billions and billions of lightyears of space surrounding us, minding it's own business. So large that we can't even begin to comprehend it's size. Still, more than half of us believe that in that vast universe, there is a God who rules over all and everything, infinitely bigger and more significant than us. But remember, he really cares about what an individual human does in the privacy of his/her bedroom. I could rant more about this, but it's far beyond the point.
Only in our universe does all this seemingly totally make sense. And still, as expected, people find the need to judge other people, ourselves, and any disagreement may or may not lead to violence. Because we are bound by our primal limitations. We may overcome them for a while, in certain areas. But in the end, despite being this intelligent, we have no idea what the hell we are doing, nor for what reason.
Don't get me wrong. I am a strong believer in science, secularism, I am an atheist, and I have no more illusions about what is real and what is not than your everyday person.
I just think that all people, including me, should pay some mind to all the absurdity in the world.

I have a proposition for you. There is no real loss or gain, but I urge you to do this, because why not?
The next time you find yourself outside, just walking around. Perhaps going somewhere, maybe in a hurry; it matters not. Take one minute, and pick up something that is in your immediate surroundings. It may be a rock, a leaf, or something made by humans. Preferrably, something that is not too dirty and contains a disease that will eradicate society as a whole.

Take that minute to look closely at what you've picked up. Study it; hold it close to your face, then far from it, or vice versa. Really try to take in the details. While doing this, just think about how weird everything really is; give the absurdity some credit. Don't think about your worries, just lose yourself to the moment. Until it gets boring. Because eventually, it will. But stopping in your path every now and then, doing something like this, is great therapy.
To some of you this may just seem like plain stupidity, and you have the right to hold that opinion. On the other hand, I'm sure that many of you do things like this regularly without me telling you to, especially if you're artists, or generally very curious about/ observant of the mad world around you.
It can be nice to take a break from your self-centered (which is entirely different from selfish, in case you failed to notice the difference) reality.

That is all. I'm tempted to make a segway into the equally weird reality of dreams once again, but I'm sure that none of you have any interest in reading about that right now, considering you're probably very busy studying rocks and leaves.
I will surely write more about dreams in the future though, so be prepared!

In terms of music, I have composed some, and I'm working on a few projects. Most noteworthy is probably this piece though, so if you want to, please take a listen!

I hope I didn't bore you to sleep with my eyeopening ramblings.
See you next time.

Yes...

Time...
